Chapter Eighteen

In five minutes, it will be 7:00 p.m., and Hunter should appear. At least that’s what her apology text said at 6:00 p.m.

Good evening. I’m so sorry, but can we meet at 7:00 instead of 6:30? I had an unexpected system issue come up and need to resolve it before quitting for the night.

Renee had scribbled her finger over the screen, frustrated and unsure of how to respond when she first read the text. She’d already been waiting in her office since her last class ended at 4:00. She had plenty of department chair things to do, and she completed her task list with efficiency. Too much efficiency, maybe, because by 5:15 she found herself with nothing to do but watch the clock and wait for 6:30.

Having to wait until 7:00 only gave Renee more time to get lost in attempting to sort through her thoughts regarding Hunter. She started at the top: Why in the world had she agreed to have a drink with her? Her agreement made sense only in an oblique way. She was…curious. Dodgy as she is about her own feelings, even Renee can’t avoid the naked truth of that reality.

Curiosity pocketed, Renee bypassed several treacherous rungs on her ladder of Hunter-thoughts, stepping directly onto the one labeled “You think she’s attractive.” Well. No avoiding that one, either. As an evolved, mature, intuitive woman, Renee can absolutely admit to herself that yes, she finds Hunter attractive. She has from the moment she saw her, truthfully. But it’s not an earth-shattering revelation. Renee finds plenty of people attractive. Men. Women. She doesn’t discriminate; anyone can be attractive!

Much to Renee’s dismay, the ladder only gets longer and begins to disappear into a thick puff of fog, making it ridiculously difficult to see where her thoughts are descending to. By 6:59, she’s feeling almost agitated at the prospect of Hunter walking into the now deserted English offices.

On cue, her phone buzzes with a text.

I’m in the parking lot. Ready?

With a huff, Renee stands and yanks on her coat. Not that this is a date, because it is most definitely nothing of the sort, but really? Hunter wants to meet in the parking lot? She fights the urge to stomp all the way downstairs and out the door, but resists only because she doesn’t want to compromise her favorite pair of deep-chocolate-colored heels.

Renee gasps when her skin collides with the outside air. It must be twenty degrees warmer now than it was this morning. She shakes her head. New England falls have a magical, trickster way of luring their inhabitants into false hope. Honestly, it’ll probably snow tomorrow.

“When was the last time you stepped outside?”

Renee turns to the sound of Hunter’s voice, finding her leaning casually against the nearly empty bike rack. Her arms are crossed over her chest, causing the top buttons of her button-down chambray shirt to pull teasingly apart. Renee averts her eyes as quickly as she can.

“This morning,” she admits, taking a step closer to Hunter.
